What is Ecstatic Dance?

Ecstatic Dance sessions are not dance technique or movement classes. Their aim is providing a space of non-verbal communication, and FREEDOM where you can be yourself, and express your being through dance and MOVEMENT. Music is a kaleidoscope of varied rhythms; it makes us float together in a sea of sensations as individuals of a large family. Ecstatic Dance is an international movement whose goal is to create COMMUNITY through Dance

Space of Freedom

Ecstatic Dance provides a space with an intimate and warm atmosphere where you can feel comfortable to open emotionally and experience yourself through the movement that music generates within you.

It is the appropriate environment for enjoying music and dance without the inconveniences of traditional nightclubs, such as late opening/closing times, dark venues, smoke and alcohol. Ecstatic Dance is an experience open to all kinds of people, since it does not require any knowledge or experience in dance.

Ecstatic Dance can unfold from simply a fun dance to an unique connection experience. Through  dancing old emotions are expressed and released … it depends on you how far you want to dive deep in them and you have total freedom to do so.

Freedom in Motion

Ecstactic Dance is a new leisure activity, and also a good tool for personal development and self-discovery. Is there music that you find difficult to dance ?, are there rhythms that bore you ?, Life is like dancing, sometimes there are very pleasant melodies and other times not so much, would you like to be able to dance all of them? Life dances within you.

Dance as you wish, feel free to explore, to enjoy your movement, to find pleasure in different emotions, joy, enthusiasm, sadness, fear …

Respect yourself and others. You can enjoy it alone or in company, ED is also a contact space; visual, physical, emotional and energetic.

There are no goals, nor expectations, nor structures, just a few simple guidelines

Movement in Community

An Ecstatic Dance session starts with an opening circle, a brief introduction, and a body warm-up. Then the music and free-movement session, inspired by mutual connection between the DJ and the participants, lasts approximately between two and three hours. At the end, Ecstatic Dance sessions are closed in a circle with all the participants where a space is offered to sharing comments and to express in words what they have felt during the dance.

Throughout Ecstatic Dance sessions, connections are established through the dancers. Despite it is an individual experience, it is also collective one at the same time, like a drop in an ocean. The word that always comes to my mouth after a good Ecstatic dance is always THANKS, my heart opens, I return  to my house feeling lighter and I write in the agenda when the next one is.

ED community grows every day, you can stay connected to it wherever you go (ecstaticdance.org)

Without shoes, without words and without judgments

We dance barefoot (as long as the dancefloor allows it), to enjoy a better connection with the ground and with our body. The absence of social energy and blah, blah, blah, … encourages other types of spontaneous communication, such as playing, laughter, physical contact or eye connection. Through free expression, whether singing, whistling, screaming or crying, the movement expands, the energy is activated and creativity arises in every moment. It is impossible to stop the mind, but we can lower our analyzing mind, judging as little as possible, what we see, what we hear, what we feel, … the more we allow ourselves to experience, the more we take. Below there are 8 practical tips.
